City prepares for its own Orchard Rd.

JAKARTA: The city administration will ban any kind of fencing along Jl. Prof. Dr. Satrio, Kuningan, South Jakarta, as part of its program to create a shopping street similar to Singapore's Orchard Road.

Head of planning, renovation and revamp division at the City Planning Agency, Iwan Kurniawan, said developers and landowners had to provide 4-meter-wide open spaces along the road.

"Private landowners must provide the required space. It will be for pedestrian and green zones. We expect retail owners to get rid of the fences and gates so the space can be used by the public," he said, as quoted by Detik.com.

Head of the city's planning agency Wiryatmoko said the pedestrian lanes along the road would be eight meters wide. He said the city administration would also set ownership regulations.

"Jakarta will have something to boast about, just like Singapore with its Orchard Road," he said. - JP
